Crunchers Grey took to the field for their first official game of the season on Saturday to play the Nomads. For many of the players, it was the first time that they had ever stepped on a football field to play a live regular season game. After a few plays on both offence and defence to knock the butterflies out, the players settled in and started to get the hang of things. On Offence, we had some great runs by our running back (#4) and our fullback (#48), all made possible by some solid blocking from our offensive line. The Defence held up when it counted and made some key tackles down the stretch. We had good tackling by #’s 45 and 40 and a timely fumble recovery by #12. Congratulations to the Raiders Grey team for getting that first game under their belt!

Atom Black Transcona Pre-Season Tournament, July 27-28
The Transcona pre-season tournament was a fun start to our 2013 season! The players on the Atom Black team have already proven that they have the commitment, stamina and great attitude necessary to have a very successful season. Players played on both sides of the ball, in various positions and still kept the TD scale tipped to the Raider side, only allowing 2 TDs to be scored against them the whole weekend. The coaches are very proud of the effort put into every play, both by the veterans and the rookies. There were plenty of great runs and kicks, good blocking, and crunching tackles. In fact, it is difficult to record all the tremendous plays that were executed which gave the spectators lots to cheer about. Great work, everyone! There were a few players acknowledged for their offensive and defensive performances….
Game 1 – offense – Dylan Fleming #63, defense – Aiden Brindle #67
Game 2 – offense – Teddy Neufeld #60, defense – Cameron Toews-Brindle #93
Game 3 – offense – Alexander Kornelson #66, defense – Cole Rickey #21
Congratulations Atom Black for a fantastic tournament! We look forward to a great season!
The Raiders Atom Black took on the Transcona Nationals Maroon team early Saturday morning. However, the early morning didn’t seem to be a problem for the Raiders as they not only scored numerous touchdowns, but kept the Nationals to 2 first downs the entire game. The Raiders’ first touchdown was run into the end zone by rookie Bryson Friesen #4. The defense spent a short time on the field with their great tackling led by Anthony Flaming #16. Mason Esau #38 scored our second touchdown by a great kick return and #2 Mareanna Magonya ran into the end zone to score the convert. We ended the first half with #24 Aidan Avanthay carrying the ball to score another TD.
The second half of the game was just as strong, keeping the Nationals out of the red zone with some great tackling and effective blocking done by the O-line. #67 Aiden Brindle had an amazing QB sack to bring the offense back on the field. But what about that slippery #63 Dylan Fleming! Great spin moves and some big tenacity saw him carry the ball in for another Raider Touchdown.
Midget Stroppa Cup Results, July 26
The Raiders opened the scoring early, on their first offensive play of the game Raiders QB Braden Saindon (#18) hit receiver Javon Chomini (#82) on a pass who then broke a tackle to break free and score on a 60 yard TD reception to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead. The Falcons would answer back right away as Bryce LeBlanc would break off an 85 yard kick return to make it 7 – 7. The Falcons would strike again on a deep passing play to take the lead making it 14 – 7 for the Falcons. The Raiders offense was able to get close enough to set Raiders kicker Leo Sawatzky (#10) up with a short field goal attempt to cut the lead to 4, making it 14 – 10. The Falcons would strike again on the following play as Bryce LeBlanc would record his second kick return for a TD to increase the Falcons lead 21 – 10. The Falcons would add another rushing TD from Daniel Norris but would miss the convert, pushing the score to 27 – 10 and taking a three score lead over the Raiders. The Raiders defense was the first to respond as rookie linebacker Colin Wiebe made his first interception of the year, and then follow it with a 60 yard return to bring the Raiders back within 10, making the score 27 – 17. Later in the 2nd quarter the Raiders offense would get back on track, and Raiders QB Braden Saindon would hit receiver Ryan Simard (#88) in the endzone for a 15 yard TD pass that cut into the lead even more, making the score 27 – 24. In the final minutes of the half, Saindon would find rookie receiver Josh Peters (#22) deep down field, as Peters made a great leaping catch for 25 yards, which set the Raiders offense up on the Falcons 5 yard line. Shortly after Raiders Running Back Patrick Bissonnette (#1) would punch it through, and the Raiders comeback was complete as they re-took the lead, 31 – 27. But on the ensuing kickoff, the Falcons special teams would strike again, and this time it was Derain Stremble taking the return to the house to give the Falcons a 34 – 31 lead at half time.
SEPTEMBER 29 BANTAMS VS TRANSCONA NATIONALS
Transcona turnovers turned into Teal and Black touchdowns on an unseasonably warm September Saturday at AD Penner.
The Raiders would start the ball rolling on a string of fumbles in their opening drive. The ball began to bounce Eastmans way after Tyler Neufeld took a handoff up the middle for the opening touchdown. Lucky Thiessen would scoop up a Nationals fumble and set up a 22 yard touchdown toss to TJ Sawatzky with 2:54 left in first quarter. On the ensuing kick off, Transcona would take the return into the endzone. With the Raiders deep in their own end, an interception with 7 minutes left in the half would allow Transcona to tie the game at 14-14.
The Nationals next drive began after a Raiders fumble, the seventh of the game between the two teams. The Raiders defence were able to hold on third down giving their offence a chance to get back on the field. Eastman’s offence sputtered but Patrick Maendal would keep the drive alive with a fake punt and run for 30 yards. Tyler Neufeld would finish off the scoring in the first half with a 15 yard touchdown run with 18 seconds remaining.
The Nationals would open the second half with a touchdown which was immediately answered by the Raiders as Patrick Maendel took the kickoff back 84 yards for the score. TJ Will, who moved from offence in the first half to defence in the second, would return a Nationals punt out of the endzone to save the rouge, stepping out of bounds at the Raiders 15. The decision to move Will to the other side of the ball seemed to be the right one as he picked off the Transcona quarterback with 11 minutes left in the game.
Patrick Maendal would push the ball into the endzone, taking it up the middle from the two yard line. The Raiders were able to recover the kick off and the momentum clearly shifted to the Eastman side. The Raiders would have a field goal attempt blocked but then forced another fumble to take over on the Nationals 30 yard line. Maendal would take the ball 20 yards to put the Raiders up 43-22.
The game would end on a controversial play call with just seconds left and the Raiders again in the Nationals redzone, instead of kneeling in victory formation, Eastman would take a direct snap in field goal formation and add to their score with no time left on the clock. With a play to the final whistle attitude, the Raiders now prepare for the first round of playoffs
