Raiders at Patriots
The strong Valour run game would prove to be too much for a normally stingy Eastman defence as they dropped the decision on a chilly Saturday morning.
It was obvious from the first few plays of the game that the wind would be a factor. The opening Patriot kick-off sailed through the endzone. Then on the first play of the Raiders drive, they turned the ball over just to get it back immediately intercepting a first down Patriot pass.
The Valour punt returner took a Raiders kick into the wind for a touchdown to go up 17-0 in the first quarter.
Raiders first sustained drive came in the second quarter but stopped short when Patrick Maendal fumbled giving the ball back to the opposition.
The solid running by Patriots number 86 would keep their offence on the field for much of the first half. A Riley Doerksen interception after a 58 yard Tyler Neufeld wind-aided punt was one of the highlights before halftime with Valour up 23-0.
The Patriots were first to score in the second half with the ensuing convert shattering a window in the community centre. After a struggling offence came up short of first down yardage, Eastmans Maendal picked up an errant snap on the punt and scampered 62 yards for the Raiders first score of the game.
With Valour lined up 15 yards off the ensuing kickoff, Tyler Wiebe picked up the short kick to get the ball back into Raider hands. They were able to move the ball along the ground but stalled as soon as they went to pass plays. A touchdown pass to Eastman number 13 TJ Sawatzky opened the fourth quarter scoring but would not be enough to catch a Patriot offence who had built an early lead.
