First Game of the Season: Pee Wee Raiders vs. Corydon Comets, August 11

It was a cool, foggy morning when the Pee Wee Eastman Raiders’ parents drove their athletes to the field. It was an exciting morning because this was it — our first regular season game. Our first game against the newly amalgamated Corydon Comets. So, here’s how it went:

We kicked off and a huge tackle resulted in a fumble recovery as Mason landed on it for good field position. Riley (Tank) provided some serious blocking to gain yards and then, Tyson threw a big block of his own to clear the way for Egan’s 30 yard run for a touchdown (6-0 Raiders). A 1-point convert was run in by Egan – again great work by the O-line. (7-0 Raiders). The defence took to the field and forced a turnover on downs. Adam had a strong run up the middle, Egan got us close to the end zone with a hard run up the right side of the field and then, Adam powered a short plunge over the line and it was another Raiders SCORE!! (13-0 Raiders). The defence stood strong once again with serious pressure by Keone. Isaac and Avery tackled their running back in a big way and Andrew, Keone, Anthony, Morgan and Decker made the D-line look like a wall for the opposing offence. Anthony finished a big tackle, George Dart stood strong for a stop and Parker’s HUGE speed took their running back down to turn over the ball on downs. Dylan W. threw in a block for Mason to get a big 1st down when we needed it the most. Egan followed Riley (Tank) right into the end zone for the quarterback sneak. (19-0 Raiders) A super kick by Nick added the 2-point convert. (21-0 Raiders).  Defence took centre stage with some super pressure on the quarterback by Andrew and TB threw in a shoe string tackle to end their march. A completed pass from Egan to Adam gained yards but the ball was turned over to their team.  Defence was called on once again and Spencer had a play stopping tackle. In fact the defence was so strong, we pushed them back into the end zone and they were forced to give up the 2-point safety. (23-0 Raiders). The offence got the ball back and a 50-yard run by Mason put 6 more points on the scoreboard. (29-0 Raiders) Nick made the kick for the 2-point convert. YES!! (31-0 Raiders) Anthony had a pounding tackle on the kick off by Tyson. Isaac recovered a fumble and a reception by Reagan plus a few YAC yards and the whistle blew for half time. To start the second half, the Comets kicked off and a great catch and hold by Tyson started it off. A completed pass to Austin gained yards for us. Defence got into the action and Lennox lowered his shoulder for a punishing tackle. The Comets’ offence came together a little better in the second half and they eventually found the end zone for a score (31-6 Raiders). The single point convert was successful on their part as well. (31-7 Raiders) After that, George Dart dove for a touchdown-saving tackle. Andrew, TB and Morgan were in on a big tackle and Mason fought for a timely 1st down to keep our drive alive. A great reverse play and super blocking opened up a 35 yard run for Mason. Huge defence stopped their powerful #98 and Nick’s huge tackle on a pass reception by them gave the ball back to OUR offence. To end the game, they were marching toward our end zone and George flew to push their runner out of bounds stopping any chance they had to score.Final score, Pee Wee Eastman Raiders 31 Corydon Comets 7.Well done boys!! Good job respecting your opponents but still being completely confident in our abilities, our experience and our training!! You have worked hard and it has already paid off. The best part is we will continue to improve and our best football is yet to come. Give it all you have and you’ll never wonder what more you could have done!! GO RAIDERS GO!!!!!

First Game of the Season: Crunchers Grey vs. Nomads, August 11

Crunchers Grey took to the field for their first official game of the season on Saturday to play the Nomads. For many of the players, it was the first time that they had ever stepped on a football field to play a live regular season game. After a few plays on both offence and defence to knock the butterflies out, the players settled in and started to get the hang of things.  On Offence, we had some great runs by our running back (#4) and our fullback (#48), all made possible by some solid blocking from our offensive line. The Defence held up when it counted and made some key tackles down the stretch. We had good tackling by #’s 45 and 40 and a timely fumble recovery by #12. Congratulations to the Raiders Grey team for getting that first game under their belt!

First Game of the Season: Raiders Bantam vs. Transcona Nationals, August 10

In the first half, Eastman Raiders William Cruise (#31) scored the first touchdown in the game, but the Raiders were unable to convert the touchdown.  The defense were able to hold the nationals and the offense was again able to capitalize when Gabriel Funk (#91) received a 25 yard pass and ran 46 yards for the Raiders 2nd touchdown.  Unfortunately the Raiders again were unable to convert.  The Nationals game back and were able to score a touchdown but the Raiders defense were able to block the convert.  The Raiders offense then responded with a 10 yard pass to William Cruise (#31) who then ran another 49 yards for the Raiders 3rd touchdown of the game.  The Raiders were able to convert on their 3rd attempt of the game.  At the end of the first half, the Raiders led the game with a score of 20 to 6.

The Nationals came out strong in the second half and opened the scoring with a touchdown but were unable to convert as the Raiders defense blocked the attempt. The Raiders offense had an unfortunate break when the Nationals were able to intercept the ball.  The Raiders defense were able to hold the Nationals and gained possession. Each team took turns on possessing the ball but were unable to capitalize until the Raiders completed a 10 yard pass to Jack Lenchyshyn (#32) who then ran the ball to the Nationals 8 yard line allowing the Raiders to follow in with a quarter back sneak by Austin Buhler (#12) up the middle for the Raiders 4th Touchdown.  The Raiders were able to convert.  The Nationals did not back down easy as they came back with another Touchdown but again were unable to convert as the Raiders defense blocked the punt.  The Raiders offense then made a sequence of running plays allowing the Raiders to score their 5th touchdown of the game complete with a good conversion.  The Nationals responded promptly by then running the kick-off return for their 4th touchdown of the game and were able to convert their 4th attempt.  The Raiders offense responded with a quarter back sneak by Austin Buhler (#12) who scored the Raiders 6th touchdown.  The Raiders completed the conversion and ended the game with a score of 44 to 26.  A great effort.

First Game of the Season: Crunchers Teal vs. Valour Patriots‏, August 11

The game began big with a kick return for a touch down in the very first play, made by Cazden.  We didn’t get the convert, though. Valour came back with a touchdown on their first possession, followed by a convert. Mikka pushed through his own teammates to get our first first down. Jerome came in for a big tackle pushing back the line of scrimmage 8 yards. Raiders tried a beatutiful fake by Kean, and a pass by Asher to Mikka,  twice in a row.  We complete one for a gain of 7. After half time, a forced fumble by our defense is recovered Gavin. Pass rushers pushed through the offensive line 3 times in the game. Mikka carried the ball for 15 yards for a 1st down, bowling over several Patriots along the way. Completed throwing play for 5 yards. Our defense forced offense into end zone for a safety. A good game by all; some great playing by the Raiders.

It takes the whole team to bring Mikka down.

First Game of the Season: Atom Raiders Black vs. St.James Rods, August 11

In the first quarter, the Raiders #22 Logan Kraus kicked off with no return by the Rods. 2nd down #86 for Rods attempts throw as #22 Logan Kraus blocks the throw. 3rd down Rods turnover on downs making it Raiders ball. 1st down #60 Teddy Neufled carries the ball on a good run for a 1st down. The offence rushes for yards with #21 Cole Rickey, a catch by #50 Payton Esau from # 9 Sawyer Thiessen. This leads to a touchdown by #9 Sawyer Thiessen, with the extra point  carried across the line by #21 Cole Rickey. With 8:05 on the clock the Raiders Kick a short one, the Rods fumble the ball and Raiders recover it on the 50 yard line. The offence rush the ball as #60 Teddy Neufeld crosses the end zone, with flags on the play the raiders reset with a 2nd and 15. A few short carries and a QB sneak brings a huge 40 yard touchdown by # 9 Sawyer Thieesen, and the extra point is good with a throw from #9 Sawyer Thieesen to # 50 Payton Esau. Raiders kick with Rods # 26 picking up the ball, huge tackle by raiders # 16 Anthony Flaming at the 45. The defense only allow a few yards and no 1st downs as Raiders receive the ball turnover on downs. With 3:52 on the clock its the Raiders ball on the 50. 1st down carry by # 60 Teddy Neufeld adds another touchdown and six more points on the scoreboard, and the extra point is good on a carry, Raiders kick once again. #16 Anthony Fleming recovers the ball and the offence is brought on the field. Ball is on the 45, #9 Sawyer Thiessen carries the ball for a 50 yard run into the end zone for a touchdown. Extra point attempt is no good as the carry is stopped by the rods Raiders kick, once again raiders recover the ball as the rods struggle with their defence. A few short gains by the Raiders offence as this ends the quarter

In the second quarter the Raiders control the ball for a 3 minutes on the clock and handoff to # 21 Cole Rickey touchdown Raiders with the extra point carry for #60 Teddy Neufeld. Raiders Kick a short one. Huge tackle by #93 Cameron Toews-Brindle and #63 Dylan Fleming on third down turns ball back to raiders offence. 1st down #24 Aidan Avanthay carries the ball for 55 yards Touchdown! Extra point carry by # 38 Mason Esau, and the clock is ticking with no stopping this Raiders Offence! Raiders kick, and Rods attempt 3 downs and can not move the ball. Raiders defense push back the offence for loss of yards. At 1:25 Raiders ball on turnover of downs #38 Mason Esau carries for another touchdown Raiders, and the extra point is thrown with # 9 Sawyer Thiessen catching #50 Payton Esau’s throw

After halftime, the Rods kick the ball to start the second half, and Raiders control the field for six minutes on the clock. Touchdown for # 38 Mason Esau from a perfect throw from # 50 Payton Esau. A nice run into the end zone for the extra point by # 4 Bryson Friesen. The raiders kick with a short possession by the Rods and turn it over on downs to the Raiders. With 2:12 on the clock left in the third quarter, and the ball on the 45 yard line, Raiders make a couple quick first downs. With :22 seconds on the clock, Raiders run a reverse and #38 Mason Esau  runs into the end zone for another Raiders touchdown. The extra point kick attempt is no good. This ends the 3rd quarter.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Raiders kick. #84 of the Rods picks up the ball, and is crushed by #4 Bryson Friesen and recovers the ball. Raiders use 2 downs with short gains and losses, third down creates a fumble and Rods end up with the ball. At 9:28 left in the game the Rods do not have enough players to complete the game and forfeit. Final Score 30-0

Atom Black Transcona Pre-Season Tournament, July 27-28

The Transcona pre-season tournament was a fun start to our 2013 season!  The players on the Atom Black team have already proven that they have the commitment, stamina and great attitude necessary to have a very successful season.  Players played on both sides of the ball, in various positions and still kept the TD scale tipped to the Raider side, only allowing 2 TDs to be scored against them the whole weekend.  The coaches are very proud of the effort put into every play, both by the veterans and the rookies.  There were plenty of great runs and kicks, good blocking, and crunching tackles.  In fact, it is difficult to record all the tremendous plays that were executed which gave the spectators lots to cheer about.   Great work, everyone!  There were a few players acknowledged for their offensive and defensive performances….

Game 1 –  offense – Dylan Fleming #63, defense – Aiden Brindle #67

Game 2 – offense – Teddy Neufeld #60, defense – Cameron Toews-Brindle #93

Game 3 – offense – Alexander Kornelson #66, defense – Cole Rickey #21

Congratulations Atom Black for a fantastic tournament!  We look forward to a great season!

The Raiders Atom Black took on the Transcona Nationals Maroon team early Saturday morning.  However, the early morning didn’t seem to be a problem for the Raiders as they not only scored numerous touchdowns, but kept the Nationals to 2 first downs the entire game.  The Raiders’ first touchdown was run into the end zone by rookie Bryson Friesen #4.  The defense spent a short time on the field with their great tackling led by Anthony Flaming #16.  Mason Esau #38 scored our second touchdown by a great kick return and #2 Mareanna Magonya ran into the end zone to score the convert.  We ended the first half with #24 Aidan Avanthay carrying the ball to score another TD.

The second half of the game was just as strong, keeping the Nationals out of the red zone with some great tackling and effective blocking done by the O-line.  #67 Aiden Brindle had an amazing QB sack to bring the offense back on the field.  But what about that slippery #63 Dylan Fleming!  Great spin moves and some big tenacity saw him carry the ball in for another Raider Touchdown.

Letkeman named to Team Canada

The All-Star list from Football Canada’s Canada Cup National Championship tournament, which was held in Moncton, NB, was released Wednesday afternoon, selecting some of the top position players from all of the competing teams in the tournament.  Amongst the names was Eastman Raiders defensive back Brock Letkeman who was the lone representative on the list from Team Manitoba.  Letkeman had a solid performance during the tournament, regularly being asked to cover some of the best receiving threats in the country and holding his own.
Players being named to the Canada Cup All-Star list get an automatic invitation to be a part of the Canadian U18 National team that will travel down to Dallas, TX in February to play against Team USA.
When Team Manitoba announced it’s final roster, which included two other Raiders players, offensive linemen Nick Bezditny and Nikolai Lipkovsky, Letkeman was named as one of the team’s Captains.

Midget Stroppa Cup Results, July 26

Stroppa Cup 2_Midget
The Raiders Midget team took the field for the first time this year on Friday night to unveil the 2013 edition of the team in the 3rd annual Stroppa Cup against the Greendell Falcons.  The Raiders and Falcons each split wins in the two previous meetings, with the Falcons winning the inaugural game, and the Raiders taking the Cup home last season.

The Raiders opened the scoring early, on their first offensive play of the game Raiders QB Braden Saindon (#18) hit receiver Javon Chomini (#82) on a pass who then broke a tackle to break free and score on a 60 yard TD reception to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead.  The Falcons would answer back right away as Bryce LeBlanc would break off an 85 yard kick return to make it 7 – 7.  The Falcons would strike again on a deep passing play to take the lead making it 14 – 7 for the Falcons.  The Raiders offense was able to get close enough to set Raiders kicker Leo Sawatzky (#10) up with a short field goal attempt to cut the lead to 4, making it 14 – 10.  The Falcons would strike again on the following play as Bryce LeBlanc would record his second kick return for a TD to increase the Falcons lead 21 – 10.  The Falcons would add another rushing TD from Daniel Norris but would miss the convert, pushing the score to 27 – 10 and taking a three score lead over the Raiders.  The Raiders defense was the first to respond as rookie linebacker Colin Wiebe made his first interception of the year, and then follow it with a 60 yard return to bring the Raiders back within 10, making the score 27 – 17.  Later in the 2nd quarter the Raiders offense would get back on track, and Raiders QB Braden Saindon would hit receiver Ryan Simard (#88) in the endzone for a 15 yard TD pass that cut into the lead even more, making the score 27 – 24.  In the final minutes of the half, Saindon would find rookie receiver Josh Peters (#22) deep down field, as Peters made a great leaping catch for 25 yards, which set the Raiders offense up on the Falcons 5 yard line.  Shortly after Raiders Running Back Patrick Bissonnette (#1) would punch it through, and the Raiders comeback was complete as they re-took the lead, 31 – 27.  But on the ensuing kickoff, the Falcons special teams would strike again, and this time it was Derain Stremble taking the return to the house to give the Falcons a 34 – 31 lead at half time.

In the 3rd quarter Raiders Safety Zack Hazelhurst (#28) would record his second major punt return of the night, breaking off a 55 yard punt return.  That return would eventually lead to Raiders Running Back Patrick Bissonnette recording his second rushing TD of the night, and the Raiders would once again reclaim the lead.  The Raiders would also add another field goal from Leo Sawatzky before the Falcons would record a TD to cut into the lead.  The Raiders would add TD and a two point conversion to ensure a 10 point lead and would then go on to hold that lead as the Raiders would come back to win the game 50 – 40 in a high scoring game. With the win the Raiders keep the Stroppa Cup in Steinbach for another year.
The Raiders will now go to work preparing for their Home Opener and Season Opener on August 10th when they host the Interlake Thunder, kickoff time for that game is set for 11:30 am.

RAIDERS 39 – NATIONALS 16

A snow covered field and a game time temperature of minus three would not slow down a potent Eastman offence who would put up some quick scores and never look back. With 174 yards in the air and 128 yards on the ground, the Raiders threatened to put their first playoff game into runtime going up 22-0 in the opening quarter.
The Raiders shocked the Nationals with a short kick to start the game, recovering the ball and then handing the ball to Tyler Neufeld for a 40 yard touchdown run.  A 32 yard TD pass to Patrick Maendal  with 2 minutes left in the first quarter and a Riley Doerksen 50 yard interception run for a major put a daunting number up on the Transcona scoreboard. The Nationals wouldn’t give up easily, scored on a penalty aided drive to put the score at 22-8 with 3:43 left in the half.
While the Eastman offence had success scoring early, the Raiders defence would consistently shut down the Nationals forcing multiple turnovers on downs beginning with a goal line stand at the start of the third quarter.
A 60 yard pass to Maendal put the Teal and Black up 28-16 at 3:50 of third. Eastman would get the ball back with an interception by James Sonnichson setting up a 20 yard field goal to extend the Raiders lead to 31-16. A fourth quarter pass to Justin Kuharski set up a William Cruise three yard receiving touchdown.
Unlike the previous week, with the win secure, the Raiders would take a knee to move on to the next round of the playoffs.

ATOM BLACK VS VALOUR PATRIOTS SEPTEMBER 29 ,2012 Raiders 56-26

Saturday, September 29th

Could it have been nicer outside? No. Sunny. 27 degrees. And a win for the home team to boot – altogether that equals a pretty sweet Saturday! We’ve got some pretty sweet highlights to share with you too – so, here goes:

The game began with a superb offensive outing. After a successful butt crack run by Paxton, and a nice run by Nic, Mason finished off the drive with a touchdown. (6-0 Raiders) The kicked convert was good for 2. (8-0 Raiders) We were off to a great start. Carson had a perfect squib kick and Parker was all over it and the offense took over again. A 55 yard run by Mason got him into the end zone. (14-6 Raiders) Tyson K. had some fun blocking on the option to clear the way for Mason. (20-6 Raiders) There was a sweet completion Koop to Koop on the screen pass and with another block from Tyson K, Mason was off to another 6 points! (26-6 Raiders) Our passing game was working as a great completion from Tyson K to Mason ended in yet another touchdown, thanks to a timely block by Nic. (32-6 Raiders) Carson was called on for the convert kick and with great height, the ball made it’s way straight through the uprights! (34-6 Raiders) Their speedy #1 ran for a touchdown. (34-12) We got the ball back and Tyson K completed a pass to Paxton who kept right on running his route through the catch and on to positive yards. Mason got his hands on the ball again and it was a touchdown result. (40-12 Raiders) A speedy tackle by Tyson K and Mason stopped them in their tracks – deep in their zone. Defense took to the field and a few things happened: great low tackle by Parker, super contain by Matthew which allowed Carson to finish the runner off, Anthony powered through the line for a big tackle in the backfield to turn over the ball on downs. The very next play, “in our books”, was a power run, straight arm and tip toe down the sideline touchdown for Paxton – but an “inadvertent whistle” by the ref called it back. We’ll still count it over here. J But, as a reward, a great fake by Paxton resulted in a great run by Mason for a Raiders’ touchdown.  CTuff was on target again for the 2 point convert.  We had a little trouble with #1’s speed and they scored.  But a big block kept them right there at 18.

Our defense got the 2nd half off and running in style with a HUGE turn over on downs. Marianna turned on her jets and had a couple 1st down runs in a row, which led to a great fake by Marianna and Tyson K holding on to the ball himself  and finding the end zone.  CTuff could not be stopped and with a perfect snap from Anthony and a great hold by Tyson K , it was 2 more points for us.  We learned what “great angles” means as Daniel stopped them for a loss of yards and then, Parker ran right THROUGH their best running back to stop him right where he was!! An 80 yard run by Mason followed for our last touchdown of the game . #1 came up with a great catch and run for a touchdown.  Their kick was good but that was it. The final whistle blew.

Boys, what a solid game on both sides of the ball, a truly great team effort and with this being our final regular season game, we are officially in 1ST PLACE in the Saturday Atom League!!! Congratulations!!

NOW, having said that… we know that the playoffs begin next weekend and it’s a new season!! We will have to play as hard as we’ve ever played to continue to be successful. We will NOT rest on the wins of the past. It’s 0-0 from right now and we will work harder than ever and take one play at a time to ensure that we do our job. Be confident boys but always respect your opponents to come… expect that your toughest football is yet to come and be prepared to try harder than you even thought possible – THEN, we will be fine.

Atom Raiders Black Vs. St. Vital Mustangs 63-33 Raiders Win

September 22, 2012

To say this game didn’t quite turn out the way we expected would be accurate. Obviously, the players, coaching staff and parents were confident that we would play a great game, but beating the St. Vital Mustangs by such a huge margin was not in the game plan. We LOVED it but we did not expect it. Having said that, we’re certainly not complaining. In some conversations I’ve had since that game, we have wondered what happened to the Mustangs that day. Who was missing? Were they sick?? NOPE!! They just met up with the Eastman Raiders Atom Black team – that’s what happened and I think, if we meet them again, they just might approach the game a little differently (but we won’t). Well done boys – you played a solid game and we’re proud of you.

And now, the game highlights: The game started out with Logan getting a big tackle and then, Kade creating a fumble. The recovered and their found the end zone. (0-6 Mustangs) Great pressure by our defense on the convert and they missed their kick. After a great drive with many positive yards, Mason found the end zone and just hit the post on the convert kick. (6-6) Their got a touchdown on a tricky reverse play. (6-12 Mustangs) They ran in the extra point. (6-13 Mustangs) Our offence answered back with some big blocks by Paxton and a TD run by Mason. (12-13 Mustangs) Convert kick – GOOD! (14-13 Raiders) Our defense did a great job and Carson recovered a fumble to get us the ball back. A completed screen pass from Tyson to Paxton got us positive yards… but the ball went back to the Mustangs. Austin chipped in with a great tackle up the middle. But on the next play their broke a few tackles and ran 80 yards for a TD. (14-19 Mustangs) Superb pressure by Parker caused a missed convert kick. The short kicked and recovered but a great stand by our defense turned the ball back over to us!! Paxton had a huge block which opened up just enough of a lane for Mason to take off for 90 yards and a touchdown! Wow! (20-19 Raiders)

The second half started strong as we had multiple outstanding blocks to get Mason a path to another touchdown (26-19 Raiders and then 28-19) TB had some unbelievable tackles to get the offence back out there. Mason scored. (34-19 Raiders) The 2 point convert was good again (36-19 Raiders) and defense got us the ball back when Parker was all over another Mustangs fumble. A great cut back got Mason into the end zone for the 5th time. (42-19 Raiders/44-19 Raiders) It was at this point that TB turned on the jets and was like lightning through their offensive line – huge tackle. But on the next play, found an opening and they scored. (42-25 Raiders) Their convert was good. (42-27 Raiders) The boys never let up and Nic did some super blocking for some big yards as Mason scored again (50-27 Raiders) The Mustangs fumbled on the kick off and 10 Mason was in the right place at the right time and ran it in. (56-27 Raiders) Parker was like a rocket through the line next and with a huge defensive stand the offence was back on the field. The “Wildcat” was working like a dream and Mason got 6 more points for us with Tyson blocking for him all the way down the field. (62-27 Raiders) The Mustangs managed to get away from our defense one last time. (62-33 Raiders) but that was it. We weren’t quite done yet, as #10 Mason added one more 40 yard run for another big score.  A highlight to end the game — TB caused a fumble and #50 Daniel recovered to completely close the door on this one.

Boys… this was truly a team effort. Defense, your improvement from the 1st half to the 2nd half continues to be impressive. Coaches, your work and your teaching is paying off – they’re getting it and we are winning well. Let’s stay humble and let’s know that there are many games to come. One play at a time and we’ll be fine. Go Raiders Go!!

Highlight we MUST mention: Season high (I’m sure) Mason Kraus – 10 TOUCHDOWNS!! What?!? Way to go buddy!!
