Bantam vs. Portage Pitbulls – September 14

FIRST QUARTER

The first quarter featured Eastman #16 run for a touchdown to make it 6-0 (missed point after). Portage responded with a major five minutes later with a pass from #27 to #71 to go up 8-6.

SECOND QUARTER

Both teams traded possession of the ball until Eastman #16 found Eastman #2 through the air for a big gain to the Portage 5-yard line. The very next play Eastman #16 called his own number to give the Raiders the lead again 16-8.

With just over a minute to go, Eastman #16 found his favourite target Eastman #2 for another big gain. Two plays later, Eastman #16 punches it into go up 22-8 over the Pitbulls.

Not to be outdone, the Pitbulls kept pace with no time left on the clock with a 48-yard pass from Pitbulls #27 to #81 to close the first half within a converted touchdown, 22-14.

THIRD QUARTER

The Portage Pitbulls came out of half time with three big plays to march down the field however were eventually shutdown by the Raiders defense. That allowed Eastman #16 to run nearly untouched down the left sideline 61 yards for the major to make it 28-14 (missed PA).

Portage responded on the very next possession with a 59-yard pass from Portage #27 to Portage #81 to close the gap once again 28-22.

Portage took over the ball after the Raiders were forced to punt the ball and thought they had a touchdown which was called back after an unnecessary roughing penalty was called. Two plays later, Eastman #52 picked an errant pass to give the Raiders great field position going into the final quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

The final quarter featured more turnovers than a bake sale by both teams.

Both teams were adamant at throwing the ball into the opposition’s hands. Undoubtedly, Portage finally took advantage with Portage #81 running 32 yards into the end zone to tie the game 28-28 with 6:43 to play.

Once again, both teams felt the need to cough up the ball to the other team. This time however, Eastman #16 found Eastman #30 in the flat who ran it in to make it 34-28 with two minutes remaining on the clock.

The Pitbulls marched down the field on the very next possession, however with 40 seconds to go, Eastman #22 sealed the victory with an interception to seal the victory.

After a shaky start, the Eastman Raiders (Bantam Sunday) improve to 2-3 and face the Greendell Falcons at A.D. Penner Park next week (Sunday, September 21st) at 10:00 am.

Raiders Pee Wee vs. St. James Rods – September 6

It was a bit of a chilly start to the day but the sun was out and the only ones who were really complaining were the parents. The boys were just fine and they played like it.

A screen pass and a fast run started the game on a scoring note for us. The raiders found the end zone. (Raiders 6 Rods 0) A huge tackle on the kick off stopped them in their tracks. Defense was back on the field which resulted in a huge interception and run back – ball – Raiders!! A fast run up the right side and we flew to the end zone. (Raiders 12 Rods 0) Convert was good! (Raiders 14 Rods 0) A long throw to the left – yep, another touchdown. (Raiders 20 Rods 0) The convert got a good bounce – just through the uprights for 2. (Raiders 22 Rods 0) A quarterback run in behind some great blocking and we scored again. (Raiders 28 Rods 0) Beautiful snap, hold and kick. (Raiders 30 Rods 0) Defense was stifling to hold them pointless for the rest of the first half.

The second half started off with a super reverse play and a 60 yard run for a touchdown. Convert was good once again. A great march down the field – touchdown Raiders! The snap was on the money – the kick FAR through the uprights…. Score Raiders. A super grab for a second interception of the game by the same defensive player gave the ball back to Raiders’ hands. A gritty run to save the first down and keep the drive going and then, a touchdown on short yards resulted in yet another touchdown. A fitting end? Snap…. Hold…. Kick…. 2 points Raiders.

Well done gentlemen… you stayed strong when some teams would have let up. You showed great variety in the offence and great strength on defense. It was fun to watch… and we’re looking forward to more great football!! Go Raiders Go!

Atom Black vs. Fort Garry Lions – September 6

Raiders Days for the Atom Black team started with a pre-game interview with Gavin Pidsadny on the short ride to AD Penner Park where he was asked what the keys to the game were for Raiders game against the Fort Garry Lions. He responded with “we just have to keep working hard and physically dominate the Lions”. Well that statement certainly rang true as the game went on.

AD Penner Park was at full capacity for the 11:30 start where the Lions kicked off to the Raiders with a short return by Gavin which was called back due to an illegal block. The first drive started nicely with a nice 1st down run by Cazden, an explosive run by Anthony and a gorgeous passing play from Danic to Gavin but ultimately the drive was stopped by the Lions swarming defense. The Lions offence took the field for the first time but had no luck as the ferocious Jerome had 3 consecutive tackles to hand the ball back to the eager Raiders offence. After a few short run plays, Cazden exploded for a 40 yard touchdown run with some incredible blocking from the offensive line. The convert attempt was blocked. On the ensuing kickoff to the Lions, their run was cut short by a nice tackle from Damon. Once again the stout Raiders defense would hold the Lions with Evan making another tackle for a large loss which led to a punt by the Lions. The Raiders were once again able to move the ball which was highlighted by a nice run by Isaiah as the 1st quarter ended at 6-0 for the Raiders.

The boys were unable to punch the ball into the end zone early in the 2nd quarter but quickly got the ball back with Jerome dominating the defensive series. This next series was highlighted by the Bauer’s best run of the season as he rumbled for 35 yards down the sideline. The Raiders drive would end at the 5 yard line unfortunately but a fumble recovery by the swarming Raiders defense would give the ball back to the Raiders near the goal line. Danic would keep the ball and push his way through for the Raiders 2nd major of the game and would take a 12-0 lead late in the 2nd quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Stephen was all over the return as he made a great tackle. On that play, the Lions #38 injured his ankle which resulted in the ambulance arriving shortly thereafter as they attended to him. As #38 left the field on the stretcher, he raised up his hands to indicate he would be ok as the huge AD Penner crowd cheered him on. After the lengthy delay, the defense dominated the next series as they pushed the Lions back 20 yards on their 3 plays. Then the offence caught fire again. The series started with Cazden rushing up the gut for 10 yards and another Raiders 1st down. On the next play, Gavin (or better known as Superman by his teammates and fans alike) took a beautiful reverse handoff and used all of his 52 pound frame to get across the line for the Raiders 3rd major of the day. The Raiders once again attempted the convert but was blocked. The defense was fired up once again with huge tackles by Brody and Damon. The Raiders got the ball back with very little time on the clock but another determined run by Cazden got the Raiders in the end zone and 24-0 halftime lead.

The 3rd quarter started with the Raiders kicking off to the Lions which resulted in a drive for the Lions which saw their first 1st down of the day but that drive ultimately was denied by the Raiders D. The Raiders offence was eager to get back on the field as Mikka said “just give me the ball coach”. The ball was handed off to the hulking centre and Mikka rumbled for a 50 yard touchdown which was capped over with a successful convert. On the kickoff, Evan booted the ball deep which and once again was highlighted by a down the field tackle by Stephen. This Lions drive would end with them punting on 3rd down and thats where Brody stepped in. He went back to retrieve the punt and returned the ball over 60 yards deep into Lions territory. On that run back, the block of the year was made by Jerome as he flattened a Lions player to help set Brody free on that huge run back. Odin had a powerful run late in the 3rd quarter that ended up a few yards shy of the end zone and that ended the quarter at 30-0.

That drive continued in the 4th quarter with the shifty Anthony squeezing in for another Raiders touchdown. The Raiders attempted another kick for the convert but fumbled the ball on the snap, but Stephen picked it up and ran it in anyway to conclude the Raiders scoring for the day. The rest of the 4th quarter was a defensive battle with the game ending on a big sack by Jerome as the Lions were attempting to score their first points of the game. The 30 – 0 final score was highlighted by the exceptional offensive and defensive line play as they were dominant all day.

Atom Teal vs. Winnipeg Nomads – September 7

The Raiders Atom Teal team had a beautiful September weather to take on the Winnipeg Nomads A team Sunday afternoon.

The defense played strong all game, not letting the Nomads earn a first down in the entire first quarter of the game. Our offense also played well in the first quarter, marching down the field and scoring a touchdown as well as a convert kick in their second series of the game.

After the first quarter, Raiders up 8-0.

The defense stopped the Nomads and with a turnover on downs, the offense took to the field. This time they were stopped by the Nomads. However, the defense picked off a 15 yard pass and the offense saw the field again. Several first downs and great pushes by our running backs as well as big blocks found the Raiders on the Nomads 40 yard line. But a fumble turned the ball back over to the Nomads. The defense worked hard to keep the Nomads out of the end zone and the Raiders remained in front at the half.

The second half began with the Raiders successfully running the ball to score a touchdown. A blocked kick made it 14-0.

The defense held the Nomads from making a first down and the offense took to the field. An unfortunate fumble on a run sent the defense back on the field where they battled hard – but the Nomads scored a touchdown to make the score 14-6 at the end of the third quarter.

The defense spent a lot of time on the field and fought hard to stop the Nomad’s strong offensive drive, but the Nomads scored a TD and a convert to make it a 1 point game.

A quick single back formation hand off with a strong run down the sidelines found the Raiders a bigger lead. After the convert, the score was 21-13.

A great short kick and quick feet by the kicker brought the offence back on the field for a brief time, however, the defense came back on after a bad exchange. Although the Nomads were able to sneak into the end zone for a TD our special teams made a fantastic block to stop the convert kick. With a couple minutes left on the clock the offense worked hard but turned it over on downs.

With seconds left on the clock, the defense managed to stop the Nomads to win the game 21-19.

Great game, boys! We are so proud of you. You are improving every game and your hard work paid off with a “W” today. Awesome!

Crunchers Black vs. La Salle Lightning – August 23

The Raiders started the game with #88 receiving the kick, and being brought down just a few yards later. With a quick handoff back to Jett and a 10 yard run our boys got a first down. A shovel pass to Jett, who ran it in for a touchdown. Unfortunately we didn’t get the convert. With Sam in for the kick, Jett ran in to tackle the Lightning receiver right after the handoff. With a Lightning fumble, and a few more tackles by our defense we receive the ball due to a turnover on downs. Our offence stepped in with a handoff to Jett whose brought down quickly. Sam threw quick pass to Jett who ran the ball for 15 yards. A handoff to Brody, with a fumble that was recovered by the Lightning who ran it in for a touchdown. Our defense stepped in to block the convert, with a tackle by 63, Christian. With Aiden, our center and Sam out quarterback leading out offense back onto the field, a handoff to Jett, a handoff to Brody, a handoff to Kyle, all only gaining a few yards before being Brought down. With a quarterback sack, we are forced to turnover the ball on downs. Our Defense stepped up with a big tackle by 63, followed with a big tackle by Kean #40, An incomplete pass by the lightning offence followed by a group tackle with Denver #69 on the bottom of the pile. Christian comes in with another tackle stopping the Lightning play, turning the ball over on downs just before halftime.

The second half starts with our boys receiving the kick, with Jett picking the ball up with an almost 15 yard run. Jett’s given the ball and runs it 10 yards for a first down. Jett gets the handoff and runs the ball 8 yards before being brought down, A quick pass and Jett runs the ball another 7 yards for another first down. An incomplete pass is recovered by Kyle, who is brought down quickly. A handoff to Kyle, is stripped away by the lightning who run it all the way in for a touchdown. Our boys work hard and keep the lightning from making the convert. The kick received, Jett makes a short run before being brought down. Another handoff to Jett who after a bit of a fumble quickly recovers the ball. The lightning break through our lines and tackle Sam before he can throw the ball. Sam shakes it off and hands the ball off to Jett who runs the ball almost 45 yards only to be run out of bounds at the 5 yards line. Another quick hand off and our boys run it for a touchdown. With a quick pass over to Brody, Brody runs the ball in for our convert. With the game nearing the end, we kick the ball, and the Lightning try to run it in, only to have our defence force them out of bounds. Another great game! Way to go Eastman Raiders Crunchers Black!

Atom Black vs. St. Vital Mustangs – August 23

It was 19 C and overcast for the Atom Black Raiders first home game of the season. The game began with the Mustangs kicking the ball off to the Raiders . The Raiders started off on their own 35 and had a couple of nice runs from Cazden and Anthony before the first penalty of the game against the Raiders helped stall the drive at the 45. The teams traded possessions with defences ruling the 1st quarter and penalties stalling St Vital drives. Evan was a standout on defence for the Raiders making some strong tackles and Cazden had a couple of nice runs but the 1st quarter ended St Vital 0 Raiders 0.

The 2nd quarter began with St Vital with the ball on their own 30 yard line. The Mustangs quarterback(#12) took matters into his own hands getting to the outside and rushing all the way for the games 1st score, the convert was missed and it was 6-0 Mustangs. On the ensuing kickoff the Raiders started with the ball on their own 45 yard line. Bauer started things out with an 8 yard run and Anthony added a couple of yards to get the Raiders a first down. The Raiders drive ended with them punting on third down and the Mustangs taking over on their 40 yard line. The Raiders defence played tough and #97 Evan was involved in stopping the Mustangs again. The Raiders took over on the 45 and once again Cazden had a good run before the drive ended with the Mustangs getting a sack on the Raiders quarterback. The Mustangs next drive started with them completing the first passing play of the game to get a first down. The drive was shut down by the Raiders at the 50 and the Mustangs were also backed up by penalties once again. The Raiders drive was shut down by a strong Mustang defence, and a fumble which the Raiders recovered, but ended up punting to St Vital. The end of the 2nd quarter was highlighted by good defence by Eastman as #56 did a good job of tackling. Bauer and Odin both added some strong runs, but the first half ended Mustangs 6-Raiders 0.

The 2nd half kickoff was received by the Mustangs and they began with the ball on the 45. Eastman started with some more great pursuits from #56 (Jerome) and St Vital was also slowed by penalties before their offence took over. #5 for the Mustangs broke to the outside and took a long run to get St Vital’s 2nd touchdown of the game. They converted the kick as well so with 10:40 left in the 3rd quarter it was 14-0 for the Mustangs. The Raiders next drive began at midfield but a couple of fumbles; the 2nd one recovered by St Vital ended up costing Eastman another touchdown. The third quarter was dominated by penalties and the Mustangs offence. The score at the end of the 3rd quarter Mustangs 34-Raiders 0.
The fourth quarter began with the Mustangs on their own 45. They began to drive the ball down the field before #56 (Jerome) for the Raiders stripped the ball away and rumbled all the way down to St Vital’s 1 yard line before finally being tackled. Unfortunately for the Raiders, the Mustangs defence stopped them right there. St Vital moved the ball to about midfield but the fourth quarter ended without any more scoring. The game ended St Vital 34-Raiders 0.

Raiders Pee Wee vs. Fort Garry/La Salle – August 23

It was a misty foggy day on our home field with much anticipation of rain – which, thankfully, never came!! This time, our boys were prepared for a tough challenge against a very good team – never mind, the defending Pee Wee champions!!

And so, the game begins. “The Force” was with us on Fort Garry/LaSalle’s first drive as we intercepted and started marching back to their end zone. A big run (untouched) into the end zone got us on to the scoreboard first. (Raiders 6 Lions/LaSalle 0) Great snap, hold and kick for 2. (Raiders 8 Lions/LaSalle 0) In fact, the kick went so far through the uprights the referee had to run into the trees at the end of the field to retrieve the ball – sweet kick! #88 of the Lions/LaSalle team answered right back though with a long run for a touchdown. (not untouched – but this time, unstopped) (Raiders 8 Lions/LaSalle 6) Offence got back on the field and a huge catch kept the drive alive but no score for us on that one. Great defensive pressure forced them to punt – and offence got back to work. TOUCHDOWN. (Raiders 14 Lions/LaSalle 6) Serious defense hunted them down in the end zone for a safety (Raiders 16 Lions/LaSalle 6) The ball was back to us and a 70 yard run easily found the end zone – another Raiders scores. (Raiders 22 Lions/LaSalle 6) Convert was good (Raiders 24 Lions/LaSalle 6) After some hard work by our defense a long reception by them to #88 and it got a little closer. (Raiders 24 Lions/LaSalle 12) A massive quarterback sack shut down their convert attempt and score stayed “as is”. Offence had a quick outing and then defense stepped back on to the field. The Tank blew up the ball carrier and we landed on it. Offence had a short field to conquer and a long throw was on the money for yet another touchdown. (Raiders 30 Lions/LaSalle 12) A short pass to slippery #88 and the Lions were in the end zone once again. (Raiders 30 Lions/LaSalle 18) The 1-point convert was made. (Raiders 30 Lions/LaSalle 19) A massive run up the left side caught them off guard and we were good for a score! (Raiders 36 Lions/LaSalle 19) Another snap on the money and 2 points were ours. (Raiders 38 Lions/LaSalle 19) Defense hung on, broke through for loss of yards and put huge pressure on their quarterback to turn the ball over on downs. But the next turn for the Lions/LaSalle offence and, guess who… #88 was gone up the right side for a TD. (Raiders 38 Lions/LaSalle 25) They missed their convert and the ball was back to us. A big push on short yards and touchdown Raidesr!! (Raiders 44 Lions/LaSalle 25) Snap, quick hold and the kick is GOOD! (Raiders 46 Lions/LaSalle 25) Defense was on with the challenge to stop #88 and with great team effort brought him down and stopped the drive before it started… positive end to the first half.
The Lions/LaSalle side started the second half with a quick score for a touchdown by their #33. (Raiders 46 Lions/LaSalle 31) Raiders offense constantly moved the ball but a turnover bot the defense back on the field and moved the opponents backwards into their end zone AGAIN for our second safety of the game! (Raiders 48 Lions/LaSalle 31) Then, a spring to the end zone on the very next play and it was touchdown for the Raiders! (Raiders 54 Lions/LaSalle 31) 2-point convert – YEP! (Raiders 56 Lions/LaSalle 31) A long kick to their #88 resulted in him escaping a bunch of our tackles until the ball was dropped and our offense got busy again. This time the right side opened up thanks to som super blocking and off we went for a touchdown. (Raiders “61” Lions/LaSalle 31) 2-point convert was good!! But the Lions/LaSalle did not stop – a screen pass to, yes, #88 and he was gone up the sidelines. (Raiders 64 Lions/LaSalle 37) Their 1-point convert was good. (Raiders 64 Lions/LaSalle 38) They added another long touchdown pass to the game and a sweet catch by #88 landed another score for them. (Raiders 64 Lions/LaSalle 44) Convert – good. (Raiders 64 Lions/LaSalle 45) We got the ball back and a high pass for us made for 6 points (Raiders 70 Lions/LaSalle 45) Yes, the 2-points were added again. (Raiders 72 Lions/LaSalle 45) After a short kick by us, fumble by them, recovery by a speedy Raider, a quick scamper into the end zone, and another good convert kick… we finished the game on “run time”. (Raiders “75” Lions/LaSalle 45) Well played Raiders in a challenging game!!
We got a good picture of all of the things we need to work on and some motivation by some amazing plays by our boys. The work is far from over – and we will enjoy this win – till next practice!! GO RAIDERS GO!!

Raiders Pee Wee vs. St. James Rods – August 16

The sun was shining on this rescheduled game of ours – much to the chagrin of the parents and a coach or two. But 9:00 a.m. it was and the Raiders were there and ready to play. The offence was on the attack right away. On the ground and in the air and in the end it was a run to the end zone. (Raider 6 Rods 0) Routine snap, hold and kick for 2. (Raiders 8 Rods 0) Defense got to work and battled down the field until the ball was back to us. Offence took no time at all to block and get a fancy run for another 6 points. (Raiders 14 Rods 0) Defense faced a good offensive drive by the Rods but stopped them when it counted. A long toss and fast run combined for a 50 yard touchdown play! (Raiders 20 Rods 0) A few 1st downs for the Rods, hanging on to jerseys, tackling the quarterback, speed by the line backers and their job was done – ball back to the Raiders. A huge throw under pressure earned us a 1st down, another throw and catch just past the defenders, a couple of short runs and we found the end zone. (Raiders 26 Rods 0) The 2-point convert was GOOD. (Raiders 28 Rods 0) Great speed forced a fumble on the kick off and a Raiders recovery was a sweet way to end the first half.
A strong start with the defense stalling them in the end zone for 2 points (Raiders 30 Rods 0) and the next time the Rods had the ball the defense had a huge stand on 3rd down with 1 yard to go which gave the ball back to us.
